A frase vencedora é:
ALMOST 120,000 revellers welcomed in 2008 at Hogmanay bashes in Edinburgh and Glasgow as Scots showed the world how to party last night.
People flocked from all around the world to Edinburgh for Europe’s biggest party – and the celebrations were spectacular.
Gales and rain forced last year’s event in the capital to be cancelled.
But there were no hitches last night and organisers hailed the bash, which drew 100,000 people, a huge success.
Other street carnivals around the country – including in Glasgow, where celebrations were washed out last year too – were also a hit, with more than 15,000 packing the city centre.
Rockers Kasabian headlined the Edinburgh party with Calvin Harris and Idlewild.
There had been disappointment when X Factor winner Leon Jackson had to pull out of the Concert in the Gardens with tonsillitis.
But Oasis star Noel Gallagher soon raised spirits by joining Kasabian on stage for two songs, before leading the countdown to the bells. Kasabian also dedicated one of their songs to tragic footballer Phil O’Donnell.
Crowds who had flocked to the capital also enjoyed the traditional gunfire on the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle at the stroke of midnight before sensational fireworks lit the sky.
Trevor Hallam, 23, Martha McKeen, 22, from Canada and Australian friend Cameron Lavery, 21, experienced the bash for the first time after buying tickets as soon as they were released.
They said: “Everyone recommended Edinburgh as the best for New Year. We were not disappointed.”
Edinburgh councillor Steve Cardownie said: “This shows once again that Edinburgh is the home of Hogmanay. It was buzzing out there and the party went without a hitch.”
There were concerts and ceilidhs around Glasgow city centre. About 15,000 gathered to greet 2008 at George Square, where The View headlined. Scottish singer-songwriter Amy MacDonald also performed.
Paige Klee, 20, from California, said: “Usually I go to a party at a friend’s house because you have to be 21 to legally drink at home. But it was fantastic to experience a proper Scottish Hogmanay.”
Londoner Neil Gullaghan, 21, said the musical line-up at George Square was fantastic. He added: “It was amazing to see The View – I’m a massive fan. The atmosphere was outstanding. It was one of the best New Years ever.”
Scotland’s largest free event was at Aberdeen’s Castlegate. More than 20,000 people watched Travis, Sandi Thom, Celtic rockers Albanach and German band The Taste.
The Proclaimers played to a packed crowd at Stirling Castle, while in Stonehaven, folk warded off the darkness of winter by throwing fireballs. There were also spectacular events around the world.
About a million people gathered at Sydney’s Harbour Bridge yesterday to witness a massive fireworks display.
Some 20,000 fireworks burst over the harbour and the images were broadcast in Britain at 1pm.
Japan saw in the new year two hours after Sydney. Thousands scaled Mount Fuji to catch the first glimpse of the sun in 2008.
China kick started its Olympic year with a party at the Millennium Monument in Beijing, while Rio de Janeiro, Las Vegas, Berlin and Venice all staged New Year’s Eve celebrations.
More than 350,000 gathered in central London, lining the River Thames for fireworks at the London Eye.
And in space, the crew of the International Space Station toasted 2008 with sparkling water as their ship crossed 16 different time zones.
