British Point entrevista: Pública

Salve, pessoal!

1. How did the band come up and why the name “Pública”?

Guri: Public came up in 2001, when Pedro met some friends from college. What remains until today is João Amaro. Since then many changes happened, even to the formation, as to the sonority. Based on what he says, the name appeared when he was in a bus. It symbolizes the simple things of life, quotidian. A band without any public judgement.

2. You say that, among the band’s influences, there is the British rock. If you could play beside any band, which would be? Why?

Guri: I think we have plenty of artists and bands to mention in this question. But I think that sharing the stage with Paul McCartney would be the dream of any of us. Why? The other day, chatting with a friend, we got to the conclusion that Paul isn’t a human being, he’s a “thing”. Thinking that a 67-year-old person sings “Helter Skelter” in that way and still produce inspired albums and without being out of vogue isn’t a regular characteristic. It’s impressive and not believeable in something like this. If there’s one person if this world that I don’t know how my reaction would be when face to face, this face is his.

3. “Como Num Filme Sem Um Fim”, besides of presenting a great pace and harmony, it presents also a good artistic layout. Who took care of this part and would there be any meaning for the several “situations” that happens in the album’s cover?

A gente respeitou a exigência dele e inseriu ela no encarte.
Guri: Who designed our cover was Léo Lage, friend and art director here, in Porto Alegre, which without modesty, is awesome. We came up to him with a breafing and he started designing the situations and showing us. The initial idea is that the cover would be very colorful, an air of the Italian countryside. But things were changing and when he shows the black & white image with all that treatment, we decided. The cover’s got too many meanings. Many elements of the songs from the album, something from the previous one and symbols already classicals from the band, such as candies and bikes. On the cover there’s also our pet: the Maradona. Before being finished, Pedro said something like: “The album won’t go to the factory if it doesn’t have it [Maradona] in the cover”. We respected his demand and inserted it. At this month, unfortunately, she left us. She suffered from cancer, and this fucking thing takes lives from people we love so much. She was always our partner and guard in the farm we were recording and there was an emotional weight so big in Pedro’s and his family’s life. But there she is, in the cover of the album, to give us luck, I’m sure of it.

4. Considering that New Year is here, what’s your wish and your promess for 2009?

Guilherme: Work, live with music, increase the diameter of our fan circle, go to São Paulo and keep on doing an honest thing at first. Another nomination for the VMB [Video Music Brasil] would be good, as well.

5. Qual é a agenda de shows para 2009?
5. What’s the show agenda for 2009?

Guri: I hope that it is the crowdest since ever. For March we have several countryside cities ready and some already set up, not to mention the releasing show, here in Porto Alegre. We want also play in cities that we haven’t played, such as Belo Horizonte, Rio, Brasília etc. But one of our greatest goals is a tour through northeast. I don’t know why, but something tells me that the crowd will be very receptive.

6. Qual será o meio de divulgação do novo álbum?
6. What will be the way of disclosure of the new álbum?

Guri: Mate, nowadays there’s no way of escape from the Internet. We’ve got to go with it and think about creative ways of arousing curiosity, for the people to hear your music. What I mean is that the album gets spead such as a virus, in the biggest number of blogs and websites as possible. It’s worth to remember that the album will come with a movie and that makes possible that we can also trade with some TV channel, work something on the movies. Selling the album with the DVD is also necessary. We can’t escape from that. Ah, but having a LP would be beautiful with this cover, that would.

7. What’s the band’s opinion about the musical scene in the country lately?

Guilherme: We believe that the underground scene (in Brazil, in general) is taking huge proportions, that this word (underground) isn’t even too much used, it’s already evolved to “alternative”. This scene is becoming a very evolved product, as artisticly, as commercially. Bands have been raising according to the efforts of their works and have been recognized in the country (and abroad) because of that. The critic today has opened the eyes for this scene. If they open more, they’ll see a very beautiful future.

8. “Como Num Filme Sem Um Fim” leaked on the web. How do you cope with that? Do you think that it’s an opportunity or do you see as a certain way of threat on the sells?

Guri: I’ll answer what I said on our community. I’m not going to answer too much different from that: What I can say is that I won’t think it’s a bad thing, it shows that there are curious people out there about our job. I really think that this won’t affect too much on the sells, even because people are forgetting that it won’t be only a disc with a wonderful encart, but an album plus a movie called “Casa da esquina 23”, with 123 minutes of many testimonials from the band and images of the making off. Forbidding people to use the resources of the internet? I don’t think that’s the case. The link is there. Who wants can also find it on the community Discografias. The album “leaked”, now doesn’t have the album who doesn’t want or who’s lazy to look it up. Who feels guilty of downloading the album, purchase it later. Who doesn’t have money to buy the album, download it! Who doesn’t feel guilty, or simply downloaded the album to get to know the band does what thinks better!

9. How was the production of the DVD “Casa da Esquina 23”? Why this title? And what can we expect from this documentary?

Hehehe. Uma piada interna na verdade.
Guri: It’s a track-by-track documentary that was produced by the national “baixada”. It’s pretty classic, as far as I can see. Music, beautiful images and testmonials from our produced (Marcelo Fruet) and the band guys. It’s also very edited and shows in the way that has to be showed our inspiration and the recording of all the tracks, besides some curiosities from the farm. The title came from a certain adoration of some musicians about the number 23. Everything we spoke had the 23 in the middle. When they were thinking about the name, I suggested “a casa da esquina ‘vintreis’ [house of the corner 23]“ (how we pronounce) because of its sonority and have in the lyric an abandoned house. We recorded in a corner house, in the middle of the “forest”, if that’s possible. Hehehe. An intern joke, in fact.

10. Do you have others activities out off the band or are you just linked to the band?

Guri: Eu e o Guilherme somos músicos.
Guri: Guilherme and I are musicians. We played for “Império da Lã”, which is a band that mixes many musicians from several bands, here in Porto Alegre. We played even in prom parties. Amaro studies Psycology and has other musical projects. Cachaça lives in Guaporé and paints T-shirts, really well, by the way. And Pedro works in a store with his mother. But, if God wants, one day we’ll live only for Pública!
